Walk down by the canal
What a nice day! Or so I thought when I got up.
I decided yesterday that I was going to go for a walk somewhere today, but couldn't decide where to go. I knew I would have to cycle to begin with as my car is broken. At about 1030 this morning I decided to go down to the local canal and go for a walk to see what I could see.
I packed my binoculars and my camera, a couple of bird books, spare batteries, gloves and a bottle of pop.
As I was cycling down the road(it's only about 2miles to the canal start at Stenson bubble), my bike decided it wanted to break(the bolt on the crank arm decided to come loose), but that was not going to stop me I thought. Every now and then I had to stop and tighten it with my fingers, it was never going to get really tight as I had no tools with me. It then decided to rain, I looked behind me and decided that it was going to blow over so I continued on towards the canal.
When I got to the canal I locked my bike up against a telegraph pole and started my walk.
The place I started from was stenson lock, it has a small coffee shop and a boat yard as well as a marina and a pub/restaurant.
There are many barges moored along the canals edge as well as quite a few within the marina. About 5minutes into the walk I came across a bridge that had been damaged in an accident last year. A farmer had been driving over the bridge in his tractor with a trailer full of slurry behind him, the bridge collapsed with the trailer tractor and driver going over the edge. Luckily the driver walked away unharmed but as you can see a lot of damage was done to the bridge. There is a sign on the fencing around the bridge stating that the waterways are looking to have the bridge rebuilt as it listed and needs to be put back to what it was in the past. There is a lot of work to be done but at least all of the bricks and other rubble that must have fell from the bridge has now been moved and the boats can get through the bridge without any difficulty. Also it doesn't say whether there had been any damage to the animals living in the area due to all the slurry ending up in the canal.
The area during the summer is really beautiful even though there is a train line on one side of the canal and just over the field on the other side is the A50. You can hear and see the cars on the road, although it doesn't stop you hearing all the birds in the trees.
It was a cold morning this morning and the water was still frozen in places, although the flow was not affected by it. There was quite a few people out walking there dogs and kids even though it was bitterly cold. I had a sit down at one of the seats that have been placed along the path and just sat and listened. it was so peaceful, I do love being away from city life and just being at peace for once. I suppose thats why I enjoy walking so much as most of the areas that I go walking are well away from civilisation.
Looking either way along the canal nobody was around and I just sat there quietly. I could hear birds all around but they must have all been in hiding because I never saw any of them.
Along the route the Findern canal path soceity have started to set little paths off the main path for people to look at the wildlife, and to help the wildlife even more there are bird boxes everywhere.
I walked quite a way really, but after a little while I started to think I had better turn round, I had gone under many bridges along the route, they all seemed to be different as well.
I got to the point where I had decided to turn around and go back and I heard this chirpy voice come from the hedge just in front of me. After scanning my eyes acroos the hedge I saw the animal that was making the lovely noise. It was a Robin.
This was no ordinary Robin he/she followed me for about 200yards as I walked along the canal path. Every now and then I would stop and take a look at it, I even started talking to it. It just seemed to love having its photo taken. I just wish I had some food with me, becasue I am sure thats what it really wanted. But I didn't care as I was getting so close to this bird it was great. At one point I thought it was going to jump on my head but instead it went onto the bridge rail next to me, only about a foot away from me. I got loads of photo's of it and these are just a couple of the good ones. At the bridge I took a few more photo's and turned around and headed back towards the start. To my amazement the little Robin started to follow me. After about 50 yards though it decided to fly off. But it was great whilst it stayed with me.
Nothing really happened on the way back but here are a few photo's from the walk.
I will add more pictures when I go on my next walk. Hopefully I will find another bird that loves being photographed.
